Sunny Day Inside And Out

Finished out our focus on the word "ARE". They are such wonderful kids. Do you know they ASKED to hear all the songs we have sung so far?! Man do they suck it up. We absolutely love their eagerness. So we listened to the CAN, HE and ARE songs. BTW. Just a reminder that if yo want me to copy the songs, bring in a CD with the child's name on it. I am happy to do this for them.

Our letter craft was a CAR and they were so brilliant they figured out why it was a CAR. "Because CAR has the same sound as "C""!

In our group lesson, Mrs. Eastman had several wooden acorns and a bucket with a cute squirrel on it. Mrs. Eastman had number cards and went around the circle. The kids selected a number card. Their job was to (1) identify it (name it) and, (2) put that many acorns in the squirrel's bucket. We learned the double-digits posed some issue for the kids. Naturally, we expected this. It's completely age-appropriate. A few children kept counting beyond their given number card (even though they identified the printed number correctly). We weren't certain if this was due to the excitement of getting to finger the wooden acorns or if they were just still developing with regard to the one-to-one correspondence. This too is something that is age-appropriate. That portion of our math focus will come later and we will continue to work on this and record our findings in the kid's files.

Mrs. Eastman read a book on scarecrows. We had a wonderful discussion on what scarecrows are and what their job is. Everyone had a different bit of knowledge about scarecrows that we put together to get the full picture. It was a fun discussion. We followed-up with a scarecrow craft that was part lesson in shape identification and part lesson in spatial relationship with regard to our instructions on how to put it together. Eg., "the red rectangle goes in the MIDDLE of the page". They did well. These are posted on the bulletin board outside our room and will go home in several weeks.

Scholastic news magazine is a part of our Friday lesson. We will not have one every Friday but most. Today's was about apples. We take the kids through page by page. We predict text by looking at the pictures. We also have them read along by saying "put your finger on the orange box". They know where we are in the text and begin to understand words make up a story and that when we read, it's from left to right.

Just a reminder that we will be going to the pumpkin patch on the 19th of this month. If you have turned in the slip that tells us who is coming that's great. If you have not sent in the payment, please do so now. For those of you that are still deciding, that's fine, too. Just try to make a decision by next Friday.

Maybe you saw Mrs. Sapp's tee today. Maybe not. Or, maybe you just thought she thought highly of herself. In honor of our classroom, our newsletter and our blog, we designed a black tee with purple type that says "I Am Priceless". If you are interested, we will place another order. Order forms will be available next week. The children's tee's are short-sleeved and are $15 each. The adults can be long sleeved or short. The short sleeves are $17 and the long sleeves are $23.

Have a super weekend!
